In October 2004, Aiken County received a $200,000 Brownfields Assessment grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to assist the community in redeveloping the Seminole Mill property in Clearwater, South Carolina, and other brownfield sites throughout the county. Grant funds will be used to conduct community outreach, perform Phase I and II site assessments, conduct health monitoring activities for surrounding communities, and develop cleanup and reuse plans at the 26-acre abandoned, burned textile mill property.

Do You Know Where Brownfields Are Located In Aiken County?
Aiken County government, through the assistance of a Federal Environmental Protection Agency grant, is trying to locate all brownfields in the county. A brownfield is defined by EPA as abandoned or underutilized properties where redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. Brownfields typically are eyesores for communities. These properties, if cleaned up and returned back into productive use, could create jobs and promote economic development.
