The Environmental Technician A Progressive Career with a Future, Not Just a Job Citizens of the United States deserve clean air to breathe, safe water to drink, and a wholesome food supply free of pesticides, preservatives, and environmental contamination. Congressional mandates have been passed to prevent disease by protecting public health and to provide a wholesome environment for all living organisms while sustaining the highest standard of living in the world. To achieve this objective, manufacturers of commercial products competing in a world economy are required to manufacture those products in an environmentally responsible manner while efficiently utilizing available natural resources. Career Advancement & Higher Wages. Job opportunities exist in the Charleston area with entry-level positions beginning at $10.00 per hour. Environmental Technician jobs vary since the Environmental Technician can fill many multi-disciplinary positions within the manufacturing sector of the economy. Available positions include laboratory technician, consultant, field environmental technician, maintenance technician, operations technician, quality assurance/quality control technician, environmental, health and safety technician, chemical process technician, data processing technician, and computer systems technician. Once an Environmental Technician is hired, most employers provide full benefits for the individual employee and their family members. Employees are provided retirement programs and opportunities to advance their education paid for by the employer. Becoming a Trained Environmental Technician The Environmental Technician, after acquiring technical skills through academic preparation, will hone those skills to perfection in the workplace. The Charleston Environmental Job Training Project will provide prospective students the opportunity to acquire those technical skills to become an Environmental Technician free of course tuition fees through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (www.epa.gov/brownfields/job.htm). Courses of instruction will teach the student how to work safely in an industrial setting and assist the student to acquire the technical skills to protect themselves as well as other employees working with them. Each student will be trained to operate heavy equipment and to implement hazardous waste operations and emergency response procedures associated with remediation efforts. Each student will be trained in soil and groundwater testing, fundamentals of quality assurance and quality control, sampling procedures and mathematical models, standards and methods for Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, and innovative and alternative treatment technologies. Once these skills have been acquired, the student is qualified for opportunities to work as an Environmental Technician not only in the Charleston area, but nationwide. Additional educational opportunities are available at Trident Technical College with a Certification in Environmental Technology, an Associates Degree with a concentration in Environmental Technology, and an Associates in Sciences degree with a concentration in Environmental Technology. The courses in Environmental Technology taken at Trident Technical College will transfer as electives to the College of Charleston which has a minor in Environmental Studies toward a four-year degree, to Charleston Southern University toward a four-year degree in Environmental Management, and to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (through Charleston Air Force Base-weekends only) toward a four-year degree in Vocational Education.
