Childcare services play a vital role in local economies. Strong childcare programs support local
workforces and comprise a significant percentage of economic activity in many regions. Employers, economic
developers, researchers and public officials are beginning to realize the importance of developing
affordable, quality childcare services for regional economic development.
Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) works with local communities to understand and
plan for the development of regional quality childcare programs.
CTC completed one of the first countywide childcare industry impact studies in the nation.
Not only did the project include the identification of the county’s childcare providers and
related economic impacts, CTC used a Geographic Information System (GIS) application to compare
the location of childcare providers with the county’s major employers and public transit routes.
This analysis assisted the county in identifying service gaps and needs throughout the region.
CTC also assists regions in planning innovative childcare programs that promote the use
of employer-based incentive programs and employer-sponsored childcare centers. Based on emerging best
practices and case studies, CTC worked with one client to develop a preliminary plan for
developing an employer consortium-based childcare center at a new major industrial site. This plan
included an assessment of costs based on local market rates and national indicators, the identification
of existing providers in the vicinity and an assessment of alternatives.
