What is a Brownfield?

Background
Brownfields are abandoned or underused properties where redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. The perception of costly cleanup activities can scare away potential developers. Brownfields are typically a blight on communities, hindering economic development. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides grant funding to local governments to address Brownfield problems. These grants enable communities across the nation to conduct Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments to determine if the site is contaminated and the nature of contamination. Grant funds also pay for health monitoring, community outreach activities and redevelopment planning efforts.

Florence Project Overview
In June 2003, the City of Florence received a $200,000 grant to implement a brownfields assessment project. The City's project will focus on selected properties within the “Triangle”, with a particular emphasis on the Former Bush Recycling property. The City will work with community members to cleanup the property and plan for the future use of the site.
