In 2002, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the City of Laurens was one of 38 communities in the
United States to receive a $200,000 grant to identify, assess and plan for the redevelopment of abandoned or under-used Brownfield
properties.
The Brownfield program is an non-regulatory program managed by the EPA and the South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control (DHEC).
Over the next several years, the City will work with interested owners, developers and community leaders to identify and
revitalize selected properties within the City limits.
So why is this opportunity great and what is a Brownfield?
A Brownfield is an abandoned or underutilized industrial or commercial property
where its expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the
presence or perceived presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or
contaminant.
