In 2002, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the City of Laurens was one of 38 communities in the United States to receive a $200,000 grant to identify, assess and plan for the redevelopment of abandoned or under-used Brownfield properties.

The Brownfield program is an non-regulatory program managed by the EPA and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

Over the next several years, the City will work with interested owners, developers and community leaders to identify and revitalize selected properties within the City limits.

So why is this opportunity great and what is a Brownfield?

A Brownfield is an abandoned or underutilized industrial or commercial property where its expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or perceived presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

Community Meetings

A series of community meetings will be held to receive input about existing properties and their potential for redevelopment. The goal of the meetings is to hear from citizens and to give developers an idea of what the community needs and wants.
